Holidays and the Public Schools

My Granddaughter told me yesterday that her 4th grade teacher informed the students that they could not mention ANY holiday while on school property. This includes Halloween as well as all religious and cultural holidays, no matter how commercialized they are.

I certainly understand that all holidays cannot be celebrated in school, nor should they be. But not allowing children to discuss their individual beliefs and cultures with their classmates .... this just promotes more misunderstanding and fear between groups.

Where are these children going to learn that there are more similarities between the world's religions than differences?

So parents, grandparents, friends .... time for you to get off the couch. I hope you accept that teaching the children in your life about understanding is your responsibility.

PS: You might need a little tutoring in this yourself.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? What exactly do kids go to school for??...apparently not an education. What's next?...I don't even want to imagine.

This is pathetic. We have successfully let the minority dictate what the majority will do. What are they going to do to a 4th grader--lock her up? It makes me want to go to her school and walk around in the parking lot with a sign. Who's rights are they protecting?

So much for helping our children understand the basis for the many benefits of diversity. Does it concern you that the people making these decisions are also charting the paths for our children's educations?

Does anyone remember the book "1984"?
