When we moved to Georgia I saw no difference between Atlanta and other large cities across the U.S., except Atlanta had better landscaping. So many little park areas and beautiful tree lined streets. What I learned was that those large trees lining the streets can be very dangerous. Because of many droughts in the S.E. United States and because of road widenning over the years the root system of these trees has been compromised. As a result there is not much holding them into the ground. When the soil around them is wet and high winds come, they are subject to coming right out of the ground. On this morning's news casts it was obvious how, when compared to the size of the tree, the root system is stunted. Several times since I've been in Georgia trees have fallen on cars just traveling down the city streets and killed the occupants. This morning it happened again. Also across the state several people were killed last night from trees falling into their homes.
Remember way back in elementary school when you learned that the roots of a tree reached as wide as the branches above. Now look around the places you go or the place you live. Is there enough room for roots to reach out that far?

Abe and I were just talking about the roots that are spreading throughout the front yard...with those roots there should be no danger from above.
Yeah, you've got another problem...the driveway.
