Yes there are a lot of potato farms in Idaho .... miles and miles of them. My son said he has noticed this past week the potato trucks passing through town with increased frequency. These particular potatoes were stored underground for the winter and now they will become the "seed" potatoes for this year's crops.
If you are a casual gardener in our area of Idaho you cannot grow potatoes in your yard and/or garden. There is always the remote chance that your potatoes could contaminate the cash crop of the State of Idaho. Cross-pollination just might happen in the wrong fields.
Though potato harvest has been somewhat automated, extra help is needed on the farms. As a result the schools still close during the yearly harvest.

It always amazes me that a crop that is grown in a certain area is not necessarily cheaper to buy there. Idaho potatoes are not cheaper in Idaho. Just like I find that California Almonds are cheaper in Germany than in the US...I think this is due to less advertising. I just buy California Almonds...without the "Planters" name that makes them five times more expensive.
Stay tuned to today's blog - my big gripe of the day.
