I told the woman "never mind" about my intended purchase, turned on my heel and left the store. The racist comments her husband had just made cooled my desire to support their business. I don't know if they "got" my message. Hopefully a little knowledge came their way today. Probably not. But I did the right thing for me. No happiness came to me, rather a profound sadness that such hatred still exists.

You go girl! I believe you did the right thing. Please make sure I don't support that business on any of my trips to the States.
I doubt that those people got the message. Hatred is learned from early on, and hard to affect conversion in adults. But it does happen, and perhaps your action was a wake-up call. Anyway, congrats on sticking to your principles. You did the right thing.
Was it the owner of the business? If not I would let the owner know how they are being represented. I change things all the time in regards to what my customers say - they are the ones that keep me employed (sort of)
Good for you! You definitely did the right thing. :)
