had a really great vacation. The weather was good and we did
take the correct clothing. Amsterdam was a surprise to us. We
didn't really know what to expect. It was clean and tidy and the
people were very friendly. We stayed at the Hilton and our stay
there was paid for by Hilton Honors points. I guess with all the
canals we expected mice to run across our feet and it to be a

bit smelly, but they actually have a "flushing" system for
cleaning out the canals every night.
OK, I'll admit we skipped the museums and we never found out what Dutch food is. But we did do a lot of walking about and took
the tulip tour in Haarlem. And we enjoyed being together!
Now for some facts: Windmills are the original pumps that drained the soggy peat to form the land. Even now pumps must constantly
pump the water out of the land or The Netherlands will lose it's solid land and become a bog again. This reclaimed land is called polter.
The canals are fresh water even though they touch the sea. The Amsterdam airport sits 15 ft below sea level.
