Last month my husband and I took an Alaskan Cruise, gifted to us by our daughter and her family. It was our first cruise and now we are smitten with that form of vacationing. We have traveled a lot and seen many wonderful places, but we have never unpacked and let others take care of us. The towns we stopped in; Juneau and Skagway, had the typical high priced tourist restaurants and souvenir shops, but if you sought them out there were places operated by the National Park Service that gave you some history and ideas of the surroundings. We took advantage of the lectures on board the ship to have some knowledge of what we were seeing the next stop on our trip.
Speaking of souvenirs: They are almost the same everywhere in North America. They just have a different name emblazoned on them. What I don't understand about shopping on vacation is why someone would buy expensive jewelry so far from home from a jeweler you know nothing about. In Skagway we met a couple who were traveling by auto. She said the night before she was in a jewelry store when the cruise ships set sail. The owner actually said "the ships have left, everything is now 50-75% off."
I would like to see more of Alaska, perhaps in a car and a camper. However, some of the most wonderful things can only be seen from the water. Daylight in July is from 3 AM to after 10 PM. Plenty of time to stare at some amazing scenery. I hope you get the chance to travel there someday.
